Go ye therefore...

Go ye, therefore...

It's easy to see without looking too far, that not much is really sacred. Bob Dylan

My wife and I pulled into the parking lot of a local Walmart recently where I noticed an interesting bumper sticker combination. The stickers were actually on the back glass of a truck. On the passenger side was a sticker showing Jesus. It read, “Remember, I'm watching.”

Fair enough.

Jesus was leaning in, head looking to his right, toward the driver's side of the back glass, where there was another sticker. This one read, “Let's go, Brandon!” I'm confident you are aware the phrase is a euphemism for another phrase insulting President Biden. It employs the f-word, as so many stickers adorning vehicles in the buckle of the Bible Belt do these days.

I stood there for a moment, not really lamenting the obscenity as much as some nincompoop's inability to comprehend irony or, more to the point, what it means to be a witness for Christ. You see, I am not a believer, but I've spent more time in church than many of you and being a witness for Christ was what it was all about back in the day. Guess they don't teach that in church anymore.

So, we did our shopping and returned to our vehicle. There was a man loading his bags into the aforementioned truck. He was wearing a tee shirt. On the back, was a picture of Jesus. He was wearing the infamous crown of thorns, blood running down his face. It read something along the lines of, “I died for your sins.”

My wife, who has mobility problems, was waiting at the back of our vehicle for the man to finish. He turned, saw my wife and comprehended her condition. He immediately moved aside and apologized. We thanked him and were on our way.

Now here was a man who, unbeknownst to him, was encountering a heathen (me). He flew the flag for Christ, not only on his truck, but on his back. He was friendly and seemed compassionate. That acknowledged, he also flew the flag for well thought-out vulgarity in a most aggressive form. It was his Great Commission moment. And he blew it. I wasn't the least bit surprised.

I encounter such scenarios pretty much on a daily basis. Folks just don't take this Jesus stuff as seriously as they used to.
